Cisco: Blending Social Responsibility with Long-Term Business Growth

I was struck by how the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil ended up damaging the country. Places are declining and the benefits do not seem worth the cost. This kind of thing has massively reduced the number of cities that want to host the games in the future.

However, when I spoke with Cisco representatives the other day, they told me about their continued success in Brazil and London with their Olympic efforts. The company focused on helping local start-ups use their technology to innovate, resulting in hundreds of new customers and jobs in the regions, as well as a positive impact on Cisco's revenues.

Outreach programs like this often have surprising results and show that companies can combine their social responsibility efforts with business growth. In other words, they do well while doing good.

Hoxton Analytics - London Olympics:
Retail stores often want to follow customers, if only to find out which screens are working and which are not working. But facial recognition, which has been successful, has one major disadvantage: it can violate local privacy laws.

Hoxton Analytics has partnered with Cisco to create a solution to track shoes and steps. It turned out to be not only more private than facial recognition, but also more accurate. (I had to repeat them because I could not believe). Now deployed in shopping malls, stores, airports, museums and other venues, footwear and step-tracking are proving to be very valuable to customers who need information about traffic patterns and behavior client. This greatly improves the quality of the tracking data without violating confidentiality.

The company took advantage of the Cisco Innovation Center in London, which also connects startups such as Hoxton Analytics to business customers using the resulting solution. Cisco has helped the company develop its solution and is actively helping to sell it. This center, IDEALondon, has helped 60 new businesses and raised more than 70 million pounds to create 400 new jobs to date (and Cisco is extending this effort with Mi-Idea in Manchester).

Porto Maravilha - Olympic Games Rio:
This project caught my attention because of the implications it had for making schools safer, especially after the recent shootings in Florida. In Porto Maravilha, an economically disadvantaged area that was to be raised for the Olympic Games, Cisco and the city government created and installed a complete and relatively inexpensive Smart City system. It included Wi-Fi connected cameras, noise sensors and other devices, and provided 15 smart urban services. This solution has also been designed for rapid prototyping, development and implementation of future services.

The part that caught my attention was the integration of cameras and noise sensors so that active shooters could be located and quickly mitigated at the city level. This was created with a series of new local businesses, and the Cisco Rio Innovation Center has co-created 50 additional solutions with partners since its inception.

Songdo, South Korea - Pyeongchang Olympics:
In South Korea, Cisco has created a "living laboratory" called IoT Cube to drive innovation in the technology of Songdo Smart City deployed in this country. South Korea is considered one of the most advanced countries in terms of smart city technology and the Internet. Using advanced concepts such as computer fog, Cisco was able to demonstrate real-time data tracking and analysis for the citizens of Songdo, which was critical to ensuring that resources were where citizens needed them.

This was a very real example of the next generation of 5G wireless networks and has become a global showcase of what will be possible. Songdo is another location for the Cisco Innovation Center.

Tokyo Olympics:
In Tokyo in 2020, Cisco intends to further expand what it has done in South Korea by offering advanced computer fog solutions, which should significantly enhance 5G and IoT deployments in the region. this moment. The Innovation Center is working with organizations such as Toshiba, Mitsui Knowledge Industry and Tokuda Lab at the famous Keio University to demonstrate what can be done with the next generation of connected technologies. The overall effort seems to be designed to help Tokyo citizens and Olympic visitors improve the quality of their lives, their work, their education and their long-term recreation.

Sell And Make A Better World:
Technological companies often seem to want one thing: to buy their products no matter whether it's right or even if you really need it. What Cisco stands out for its innovation centers and the efforts of the Olympic Games is that through engagement, a company can not only generate strategic business opportunities, but also significantly improve the quality and the safety of human life. Making a better world takes longer, but supports a company's strategic future and makes it a preferred business customer not just to governments, but to partner. In short, efforts like this not only ensure the future of Cisco, but can also guarantee ours.

In my book, it's a very good thing.

Could Cisco Be One Step Closer In Delivering Its Network Intuitive Vision?

It seems that intent-based networks are on the lips of all C-level executives and IT executives these days. This is not necessarily a new concept: it has just been slapped with a new ingenious term of marketing (unlike other technical platforms of the past, I might add). I have written on intention-based networks from various points of view and can read a previous article here, if you are interested. At a high level, the philosophy is to capture and translate business intent, orchestrate network policies for activation, and continually ensure that the network operates according to this "expected" standard. The ultimate goal is to create a network of self-healing: a network that eliminates manual and responsive interventions, and frees IT employees to bring more value to the key businesses they support.
cisco networking practice test

In early summer 2017, Cisco Systems CSCO + 0.34% launched its "Network". Intuitive strategy I must admit that I was a bit skeptical at the time. I had heard a lot about marketing focused on the new business vision, but I did not see much depth in the ad. However, he has advanced only eight months and the company seems to fulfill his vision. Today, Cisco has announced promising new security solutions for the data center, campus and branch.

The network guarantee was the missing link

As previously defined, a network solution based on closed loop intent must offer the three main elements of translation, activation and security. Cisco has provided translation and activation in the past, but security was the missing link (if you're interested in a little more context behind network security, you can read my article on the subject here). With today's announcement, Cisco now offers network security on three fronts:

Cisco Network Assurance Engine visits the data center and continuously checks the entire network infrastructure.
Cisco DNA Center Assurance addresses the campus and branch, providing information and visibility to improve the efficiency of IT staff in wired and wireless networks.
Cisco Meraki Wireless Health focuses on solving wireless problems in distributed computing environments, improving the overall user experience.
The brain behind a smart network

What surprises me most in the Cisco Warranty Announcement is the intelligence behind each of the three key solutions. The Cisco Network Assurance Engine's assurance capabilities are based on a new approach to network mathematical modeling with over 5,000 possible scenarios, derived from Cisco's reserves of approximately 30 years of customer knowledge. Cisco says that it will benefit the customer by predicting the impact of network changes, proactively eliminating audit-related issues, and ensuring that the strategies are aligned with business requirements. Given the depth of Cisco's expertise in the data center, it's a solid bet that the company can achieve on this front.

Cisco DNA Center Assurance provides visibility into the interaction between users and applications, providing historical information and predictive capabilities for campus and branch network operations. With a focus on network isolation, replication, and troubleshooting, Cisco's goal is to change the polarity of reactive network disruption / patch management to proactive, value-added services for your business unit components. . . This high goal has the power to change the C level mindset on network services. Considered "overloaded" in the past, in an intention-based world, networks can become a strategic asset to improve agility in an organization and increase user productivity.

Finally, Meraki Wireless Health is focused on improving the wireless user experience by providing more complete visibility, vision and analysis. With a cloud-based deployment model, the goal is to identify anomalies, automate resolution, and simplify the complexity of one of the most visible complaints of users in any organization. Meraki Wireless Health will be launched later in Cisco's Q1 2018, and at this point, I plan to benchmark its capabilities against other solutions in the market. Cisco Network Assurance Engine and DNA Center Assurance are currently available.

Net (work) smarter not harder

I think the old adage "working smarter is not

That said, with Cisco's global presence, a broad client installation base, and a global approach to network security, I believe the company is well positioned to capitalize and realize its vision of intent-based networks.

Disclosure: my company Moor Insights & Strategy, like all research and analysis companies, provides or has provided research, analysis, consulting and / or consulting services to numerous high tech companies in the sector, including Cisco Systems CSCO + 0.34% or related to this article I do not have any equity positions with any company cited in this column.

What to Expect from Cisco in 2018

As Cisco changes from equipment to programming, it's revealing a radical new line of items for IoT and cloud

As the superior systems administration organization shapes its gets ready for 2018, investigators and clients say Cisco is at to some degree an intonation point, changing from an equipment based organization to a coordinated equipment and programming centered one.

In doing as such, Cisco has plotted the up and coming age of its system administration items as goal based systems administration. In the mean time, as equipment deals development eases back because of workloads moving to the general population cloud, the organization eyes the Internet of Things and edge processing as new outskirts for income development.

"On the off chance that you take a gander at HPE, Dell, IBM and Cisco, those organizations are attempting to reexamine themselves for this cloud, IoT world," says Forrester organizing examiner Andre Kindness. "The customary method for doing things is dead. They're all sufficiently enormous that they're not leaving at any point in the near future, but rather they likewise may need to discover another thing to control them later on. For Cisco, perhaps that is IoT, possibly that is programming."

From a business point of view, Cisco is as yet doing fine. The organization earned income of $49 billion out of 2015 and 2016 and $48 billion in the monetary year that finished in July 2017; exchanging deals were down 5% in the financial year, while benefit income was up 3%. The following are a portion of the key innovation territories the organization is trusting will goad another time of system development in 2018 and past.

Goal based systems administration

While major systems administration headways as of late have based on programming characterized organizing, in mid-2017 Cisco propelled another purpose based systems administration (IBN) methodology that is relied upon to shape the organization's future system administration guide. What is IBN? Clients direct strategies, and system arrangement programming consequently designs and keeps up the coveted condition of the system. In 2018, expect the hypothetical points of interest of IBN to wind up plainly a reality as verification of idea organizations are taken off.

Brad Casemore, an expert with IDC, says Cisco additionally needs to accommodate its to some degree incoherent IBN techniques. At the point when Cisco propelled IBN it did as such with regards to grounds organizing gear, based off its Catalyst equipment line and the DNA Center programming. Cisco says it's been doing IBN for quite a long time – in spite of the fact that not calling it that – in the server farm with its heap of Nexus 9K switches, Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) and Tetration investigation. "I think you'll see Cisco speaking all the more completely about how expectation based systems administration will be taken off over their portfolio, in the server farm, the grounds and over the WAN," Casemore says. "I believe they're endeavor to entwine those account strands."

Benevolence, the Forrester investigator, says he wouldn't be amazed to hear Cisco apply the plan based moniker to other administration frameworks: purpose based security, goal based server farms, and so on.

Cisco's progress to SaaS

While reporting its new IBN system, Cisco officials made a key point: It's offering the product that runs IBN recently. Customarily the product that keeps running on Cisco organizing equipment has been sold in never-ending licenses. DNA Center, the organization's IBN stage for its grounds switches, can be acquired as a membership or SaaS display.

"It's really evident they're in a change from being equipment driven to programming centered, and that accompanies its difficulties," says Amy Arnold, a Cisco client and system build who works in the general population division in Texas. As Cisco reveals its new items like DNA Center and Tetration by means of programming, she takes note of that equipment is as yet imperative, however. "Despite everything we'll have a lot of switch board tallies, yet perhaps just not the same number of," she says. Arnold says if better programming can enhance uptime, unwavering quality and permit organize specialists to be more nimble at that point she's just for it. Casemore takes note of that monetary financial specialists will likewise be checking this change intently.

The Internet of Things

As customary system equipment deals start to level off, the expansive new web of things advertise is a zone where Cisco is expecting huge development. Cisco has just put vigorously in making ruggedized equipment hardware that can keep running in IoT gadgets, and in addition programming stages to control IoT arrangements. In 2016 Cisco acquired IoT administration merchant Jasper for $1.4 billion. In 2017 Cisco propelled Kinetic, an IoT operations programming stage that enables clients to computerize associations with IoT gadgets, extricate information from them and course it for investigation. Anticipate that Cisco will advertise itself forcefully in the IoT showcase on both the equipment and programming side.

Cisco's most recent cloud procedure

After a modest bunch of turns, Cisco is prepared to try its most recent cloud procedure out. In years past Cisco endeavored to develop Intercloud, its system of Cisco-controlled mists, yet it abandoned that in 2016. This time Cisco is joining forces with Google Cloud Platform to offer a half breed cloud stage in view of the open source Kubernetes programming for running application compartments. Cisco will empower its server equipment frameworks to run Kubernetes, while furnishing incorporations with Google's cloud-based Kubernetes benefit. Then, Cisco's association with Google isn't select, so it will likewise enable clients to oversee associations with other open cloud suppliers. As VMware accomplices with AWS, Google and IBM, Cisco appears like it wanted to amigo up with an open cloud supplier, and did as such with Google. Facilitate illumination of precisely what will originate from this organization, and Cisco's general cloud system, could come in 2018.
